GENERAL NEWS

Welcome back to the new school year.  We hope you have all had a good summer break.  Our new Reception Class will be joining us on Monday 6th September.
It was lovely to see all the children back looking purposeful and tidy in their school uniforms.  We have had a great start to the term and are feeling very positive about a fantastic 2010 – 2011.

We apologise for the vast amounts of information we are sending to you this week. You will find in addition to this newsletter the following attachments.

  • Letters regarding Football, Athletics, Gymnastics, Tennis Clubs, Swimming lessons for KS2, and Play Rangers,
  • After School Club timetable with dates and times
  • Diary dates for the year
  • Punctuality and Attendance Guidelines
  • PTFA News

Although it is our plan to eventually email a copy of the newsletter to a large majority of parents, we have not yet input all the addresses, so therefore, please either check the web site or collect a copy from the front foyer.  Reception Class will be given a paper copy until we have input your email addresses.

Meet the Teachers
We would like to invite you ‘Meet the Teachers’ next week.  We have allocated different nights to each year group to ensure that parents who have more than one child have the opportunity to meet all the relevant teachers. Classrooms will be open from 3.30 – 4.00pm on the following days: - Monday Yr.5 & 6, Wednesday Yr.1 and Yr2, Thursday Yr.3 and 4.

School Meals
Dinner money is now £1.65 per day - £8.25 per week.  The Catering Department deal with the dinner money, so please send your money in on a Monday morning to the class teacher, in a sealed envelope.  Please make cheques payable to South Gloucestershire Council (SGC).    If you have any queries regarding dinners, Vicky, our school cook, is usually available in the mornings, so just go and have a chat with her.  Vicky deals with all the money relating to dinners and it is extremely helpful for her if dinner orders are made and paid for on a Monday morning.  Thanks.  Please remind your child that they must remember to hand in their dinner money.

Swimming Lessons
Lessons commence on Wednesday 8th September for Yr.4 and Yr.6.  Children leave school just after 9.00am.  Separate letters have been sent home with the timetable for Yrs.3 – 6.

School Uniform
Mrs. Donna Allen is the lady to see if you need school uniform!  Mrs. Allen will be in school on a Friday morning between 9 and 10.00am, when she will be able to help sort your uniform order.  Please use a yellow order form and send it into school and she will process this weekly and send the uniform home with your child.
Cheques should be made payable to Emersons Green Primary School PTFA.  Alternatively you can order directly on line at http://www.schoolwearforless.com/schools/EmersonsGreenPrimaryBS167GA.

After School Clubs
The Timetable for After School Clubs is attached. Spare copies are available from the entrance foyer.  Please check the timetable for times of clubs etc. Letters relating to clubs will be sent home with your child or with the Newsletter. Places for clubs go quickly so please reply to any letters as quickly as possible.

Attendance and Punctuality Guidelines
Our leaflet on regular attendance and punctuality is attached. Please take the time to read this. Good attendance and punctuality is so important.

School Diary
The school diary can be found on the Newsletters page. This has some important dates that you may wish to transfer to your own calendar/diaries. This is accurate at the time of publishing but dates do change, so please check the newsletter weekly for updates.

10th Birthday Celebrations
We hope you had a wonderful summer holiday and found time to make some bunting flags and design a birthday logo for the school’s 10th birthday celebrations.  There is still time if you were busy as the logo competition closes on 24th September.  Entry forms and a collection box are in the school foyer.  Please hand completed bunting flags into the class teacher.

Further details are on the PTFA notice board so keep checking it for updates and how you can help.  More information on the events planned will be available soon but if you have any queries please email either Ali Rawling (alison.rawling@googlemail.com) or Meryl Grimshaw (megandmeg@hotmail.com) or catch us in the playground.

Shoe Box Collection
Just to let you know that we will be doing our Christmas Shoe Box collection again this year.  We support the Eleanor Charity who transport the boxes to Romania.  More information will follow but remember to keep a shoe box handy.  We are planning to collect the boxes by 10th November so that they can be delivered before Christmas.

Reception Class children – September 2011 and Secondary School Yr.6 children July 2011
If you have a child born between 01.09.06 – 31.08.07 they must be registered for school to start in September 2011.  The information letter will be sent home during the next week.  Applications for places need to be made on line and sent directly to South Gloucestershire Children and Young People’s Service.  Please do not return them to school.

Yr. 6 Secondary Transfer letters have already been sent home.  If you did not receive one, please contact the office.   The Yr.7 Admission Form must be completed on line and returned to South Gloucestershire Children and Young People’s Service.  Please do not send them back to school.  We will not follow this up so it is your responsibility to make sure these forms are returned to the Authority by the stated date.  If you are hoping to choose an Independent School, CTC, St. Mary Redcliffe or a school that is not in the local catchment area, it is still necessary for you to complete the form requesting a place at a local school.  This will cover you if your application to an alternative school is not successful.

Lost – during the end of summer term/holidays
Lewis Allen, Yr.5 has lost his JD Bug Scooter, black frame with blue check grip tape.  Please could you check at home?  Thanks.

After School Chess Club

The Chess Club is held on Thursdays starting at 3.20 and finishing at 4.15.  The first meeting of the After school Chess Club is on Thursday 16th September. As more children want to join, than there are places it is important that all children, including last year players, return their reply slips as soon as possible and certainly before Friday 10th September.  To join the Chess Club children need to demonstrate that they know the rules of chess by having obtained the Bronze Chess Award. Children can earn the award at lunch time sessions with Mr. Birch. Year 2 children will be invited to lunch time chess after Christmas.

Christmas Fair – December 3rd 2010   5.30pm – 8pm
Just a very early ‘date for your diaries’ to let you know this year’s family friendly Christmas Fair is on Friday December 3rd.  Last year’s fair was a roaring success and we’re hoping this year will be even better.  Our troops of helpers were fantastic last year and we’ll be needing lots of help again this year both during and after the fair if it is to be a success.  If you think that you can spare some time to help (no matter how little), please catch us in the playground anytime.  Alternatively email getjules@woodfortrees.net.  Also, we’ll soon be asking for a variety of donations – as always, if you feel you have something in your cupboards you can donate (bottles of wine, good quality smellies, books or toys, party bag prizes etc) there is a donation drop box in the foyer.

Fundraising Website - Online Shoppers Wanted!!
Do you regularly shop on the internet? Did you know that you can help raise funds for the school every time you surf the shops?  Emersons Green Primary School PTFA have signed up with www.easyfundraising.org.uk, an innovative website where thousands of people are raising money for charities every time they shop.
By using easy fundraising to access over 2000 well known retailers, savvy shoppers generate a free donation for the good cause of their choice. And as donations can be as much as 15% of the purchase price, we’re really hoping parents, families & friends will log on and support us.
Featuring over 2000 of the UK’s most popular retailers including M&S, Argos, Amazon, Boden, Tesco and many more, easy fundraising has already raised helped UK charities raise over £1.7 million. As well as raising funds, the free to use website also gives shoppers access to hundreds of offers, discounts, vouchers and free delivery codes that they won’t find elsewhere.

There’s never been a better reason to shop till you drop! Visit http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/emersonsgreenptfa and follow the instructions.

The Out of School Club now meets at Emersons in the morning (7.30-8.40am) when breakfast is available and the evenings (3.20- 6.00pm). This is proving to be a huge success and the children are enjoying not having to trek up to Mangotsfield after school. There are still places available but are likely to fill up quickly.
